Did we just hear that right - Is the world-famous Art Fair coming to the City of Angels at last…? Affirmative: at the Venice Biennale 2017, a special announcement has been made, which pleasantly surprised those who had been looking forward to it - Art Biennale is finally going to be held in Bangkok for a change, after having taken Venice as its siege for longer than a century. Rejoice, Bangkok!
The Bangkok Art Biennale Association will be the host of this famous and much awaited event. Save the date: between November 2018 and February 2019, the metropolitan will be transformed into a giant museum of local and international arts, adopting the theme of “Beyond Bliss” - let’s wait and see how this turns out.
Apart from integrating local artists to the global canon, the city also aims to boost the income from tourism especially in the cultural sector.
Modelling after the Venetian original, the Biennale has now been expanded to over 100 countries around the world - most of which still retains the essence of the fair unfailingly. While the Venice Biennale is not sponsored by any party to prevent any influence and intervention and allow arts to run its course, the other fairs still inevitably find themselves under the patronage of some organization or others. However, in the tourism sector, the fair ultimately brings in a lot of revenue especially from those interested in arts and culture, but not excepting those looking for originality and a change of air, as the host cities will be lavishly decorated with art pieces.
Thailand will follow the first country of the South East Asia Singapore in hosting the Biennale in 2006, and the Biennale Logja, Indonesia, the contemporary art hub of the region. Now, connoisseurs, the wait is almost over - Just a little bit more until Bangkok gets transformed into a living art display!
