The role of female figures appears more evidently in many industries. Some research showed that the role of women is significant in helping make an organisation more efficient. By giving women a part in the industry, we get to see women shine on world’s stage and help generate the economy.
In Thailand, women are mostly equal with men. In fact, Thailand was one of the first countries in the world to have equal right to vote. In the architecture industry, there are a great number of women working and leading design companies. One of the most brilliant women in this creative field is Sanitas Pradittasnee, the founder of Sanitas Studio. Her unique works have caught international attention and stood out in the circle of Thai architecture. Her works vary from architectural work to art installation. She is one of the few artists who did Land Art.
Sanitas graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Landscape Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, before pursuing a Master Degree in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design in the UK. She came back to Thailand to open Sanitas Studio, a Landscape and Art studio in 2010. She once said in an interview that studying art broadens her horizon in terms of creative thinking process and presenting the idea through artwork. Architecture, in her belief, is also based on personal experience and not only the visual choice in materials which is why Sanitas Studio’s architectural design meets the need for function and art. WYNE Sukhumvit is a prime example of her work that brings out the cultural features such as elements usually seen in temples, in order to integrate architectural design with the life of those living in the community and with the sacredness of land.
Sanitas Studio stands out in its number and scale of project. Apart from WYNE Sukhumvit, the studio has collaborated with major real estate developer like Sansiri in the project of “BAAN SAN KRAAM” which received the Honor Award – General Design: Residential Complex from the Thai Association of Landscape Architects 2015. Sanitas Studio also created artwork like “KHAO MO Mythical Escapism” which was exhibited at the BACC before developing into the exhibition entitled “Capturing the Intangible” at the Art Center of Chulalongkorn University in 2016. The exhibition questions the cultural tradition of worshipping sacred objects through installation art and sculptures.
Recently, Sanitas Studio has released another artwork called “In the Mountain” in Chiang Rai and large scale land art called “CRAFTED LAND” next to Central World shopping mall (which looks like a park). The subtle and delicate landscape architecture of Sanitas can probably be distinguished by her femininity. Nevertheless, this proves the place of women in architecture circles and the ‘originality’ in a woman’s work.
