The name FolkCharm is most fitting for this minimal fashion brand—these simple cotton apparels which have been meticulously tailored exudes a local charm within every step of its production.
Lookkaew Passawee T. Kodaka saw the problem that Thai apparel made from hand-woven textiles available in the market had designs that were difficult to wear in daily life. If not exorbitantly priced, then they would be extremely cheap, thus resulting in a lower quality of materials or tailoring. With the collaboration of a group of housewives in Loei, she has created meticulously tailored clothes that look international, are plain, are easy to wear and most importantly, are moderately priced so everyone can wear it at ease.
FolkCharm apparel is made with organic yarn grown by the community. The villagers spin their cotton that is usually cream or brown in color by hand. Dyeing is done with natural colors only, meaning that these clothes are chemical-free and safe for both the users and producers.
Lookkaew is aware that the reason people don’t buy hand-woven clothes is because they are hard to care for and must be washed by hand. FolkCharm has produced soft clothes that can be machine-washed. Besides clothes, there are also bags, keychains and cute, little lifestyle products as well. Without a doubt, these heart-warming designs and care for the customer has made FolkCharm a favorite within Thailand, Japan and Korea.
Fans of FolkCharm keep coming back for more, because they can be sure that profits truly go back to the producers. The brand sends back 50% of the retail price of the clothes and products back to the community of cotton farmers and weavers. Beyond getting a better livelihood, these people can also take pride in the beautiful clothes they have had a hand in creating. On the customer’s end, people who wear this brand can also feel proud to be a part of the slow fashion movement—where they don’t only look great, but also contribute to a local village’s livelihood and being green at the same time.
